A Decade of Research & Restoration (1999-2009)

A visit to the Teackle Mansion today reveals a ten-year works in progress, as the Friends of Teackle Mansion together with the Somerset County Historical Society, continue to painstakingly restore the house to its original grandeur.

Recognizing its rare status in early American domestic architecture, the organizations set out to restore and preserve it as an important part of our history. Through generous grants, donations, and many foundation gifts, the beautifully crafted brick dwelling has undergone major structural and restorative work underpinned by necessary research.


Projects Completed:
  • Replacement of a deteriorated, wood shingle roof.
  • Major brickwork repair and repointing.
  • Epoxy stabilization and reinstallation of original jack arches and sills.
  • Plaster panel restoration.
  • New electrical service.
  • Reconstruction of the front and rear platforms.
  • Replacement of 25-30 year old boilers.
  • Heat Loss/Gain Survey for Geothermal Researc.
  • Design and Tests for Geothermal Heating/Cooling System.
  • Full paint removal and repainting of the exterior architectural woodwork, using a paint color achieved through microscopic analysis.
  • Historic Structure’s Report and Architectural Record Drawings of mansion.
  • Elizabeth U. Teackle Letter Transcription Project, Phase I.
  • Archaeological investigation of the grounds, which produced a wealth of cultural information.
  • Ground-penetrating, radar survey in anticipation of  a geothermal heating/cooling system.
  • Purchase of the Sarah Martin Done house property located behind the mansion, planned as part of the future Somerset Heritage Center.
  • Roof replacement and repainting program for the Sarah Martin Done house.
  • Implementation of Educational Programming with Somerset County School system.
  • Salute to Somerset Endowment Fund-raiser in 2008

The second phase of research and restoration (2010 – 2020) will continue the work initiated by Friends of Teackle Mansion and the Somerset County Historical Society. Finally, in years to come, this national treasure will stand in full glory as one of the finest dwellings of its time, preserved for all to witness and experience.
